Don't wait for the 6th
If any of these show up, call the vet the same day — or an emergency clinic if they're closed.
- Yellow tint in his gums, the whites of his eyes, or his belly skin
- Pressing his head into a wall or corner, circling, or a seizure
- Won't eat at all for a full day, or repeated vomiting
- Black, tarry stool, or blood in vomit or stool
- Straining to pee with nothing coming out, or no urine at all in 12 hours
- Can't stand or walk, collapses, or gums go pale or grey
- Belly looks swollen or feels tight and full
The head-pressing one is worth knowing by sight — it's an odd, specific behavior that signals the liver may be affecting his brain, and it needs same-day care.
Worth asking on the 6th
A short list so you leave with the full picture, not just "not good."
Can I have the actual liver numbers written down — ALT, ALP, bilirubin, and albumin?
The values show how severe it is, and albumin shows how well the liver is still functioning.
Could the liver be causing the confusion, and would lactulose help?
If toxins are building up (hepatic encephalopathy), lactulose can genuinely clear some of the fog.
Will an ultrasound be part of the next tests?
That's what tells a mass apart from general liver disease — they mean very different things.
Did the meclizine or Clavamox change anything this week?
Show them this log. If the wobbliness lifted on meclizine, that points toward a balance issue over the liver.
Is he due for a diet change, and is he on anything that's now hard on his liver?
Some routine meds get processed by the liver and may need adjusting. A liver-support diet may also be worth starting.
From here, what does keeping him comfortable actually look like?
Ask what to watch for, and what to do on a hard day, so you're not deciding it in a panic.
